Making Body Butter with a Generic Base

Hello Beauties,

I hope you are all having a wonderful day. Today I am going to switch gears just a bit and delve into the world of lotions. I feel like once you have messed around and learned how to make candles, my creativity starts to expand and I want to learn more about beauty products. (Don't worry, I will still be posting about making candles and slowly expand into making them from scratch, with your own ingredients.)

So, off to lotion making we go. I will post the ingredients that I used, as well as link them for you. Some of the items I use are not available at Amazon, as they 'generic' store specific brands. I will link those items, as well as the similar item (all of the same ingredients) that you can get at Amazon.

To start, you will need:

Now to the fun part:
I used Pink Sugar as my essential oil when making this body butter. You can use whatever scent you prefer, as we all have different favorite scents.
With Life of the Party Body Butter, the instructions state that you to warm up your butter. I use a food scale to measure out my lotions into how many portions of each scent I am going to make. In this case, I made 8 oz of body butter (half of the container). When making lotions, the general rule of thumb is that you will want to use 3% essential oil of your total weight of lotion for your recipe, but you can always check to see what the particular oil you are using percentage is.
Sidenote: When using essential oils in products that are used for your body, you do not want to use too much. Essential oils can have reactions to skin if you use too much, so just keep that in mind. When using essential oils in candles, that's a whole different story. You generally go by the 6% rule, but you can always add more if you feel your scent throw isn't strong enough for you.
In this case, I used 8 oz (30ml x8), which is 240ml. Then multiply 240 by 3% or .03 and that will be 7.2 mls. This means you will need roughly about 1/2 TBS (7.5mls) of essential oil.
After you have measured out your lotion, you will want to put the lotion in a microwavable safe bowl and heat your lotion for increments of about 5-10 seconds. Personally, I don't melt the base down completely, I just melt it to where you see the oil start to separate a little. Once you have that separation, you will take the bowl out and mix in your essential oil as well as your dye. Stir it nice and good and make sure you continue to stir until there is no more separation. You can also add more dye if you do not have the preferred color that you are going for.

If your butter is still warm, you can place in the fridge for a few minute to cool it down. After the butter has cooled down, continue to stir until there is no more separation between the oils and solids. Once you are done with that step, open up your jars, and fill them each up with 4 oz of butter.

After your body butter has cooled, you can put your lid on and seal the lotion. Congratulations, you have just made your own homemade body butter. Enjoy!

xoxo,
